See Artec 3D scanning in action at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition

What: Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition
Where: 6–9 Carlton House Terrace, London
When: June 30–July 05, 2026
Artec 3D is proud to announce that researchers from UCL and the University of Southampton will exhibit our technology at this year’s Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition.
Equipped by Artec Ambassador Central Scanning, the universities use Artec 3D scanning to engage in innovative scientific teaching and research. During this prestigious event, their researchers will show visitors how they use Artec Spider II and Artec Leo across a series of engaging live demos and displays designed to make scientific study more accessible.
- Immortalising Natural History in 3D: In this flagship exhibit, researchers will show how 3D imaging techniques are used to create digital twins for archiving, exhibition, and running virtual experiments that tackle fundamental questions in scientific research.
- “Grow your own chameleon”: A mini-game that will allow visitors to explore 3D models of fossil and living animals. These 3D assets will show how organisms grow – as well as highlighting the research being carried out by teams at UCL and Southampton.
- Building a virtual museum: A hands-on activity that will allow visitors of all ages to make animals out of modelling clay. Artec 3D scanning will then turn these creations into digital 3D models that will be displayed and uploaded to the SketchFab website.
- VR Experience: Using VR headsets, visitors will be able to explore the insides of fossil sea urchins and reassemble a dinosaur skull in an activity tied to the team’s research.
- On-stage live demo: The exhibit also features an on-stage scanning demo with Artec Leo being used to capture a large fossil specimen in front of a live audience.
The Royal Society’s largest event of the year is designed to strengthen ties between the public and STEM professionals, while engaging a wider audience in the latest scientific research. Each year, the exhibition attracts over 10,000 visitors, so it’s a must-see for science aficionados.
Those interested in exploring Artec 3D scanning in person should also take part. The technology is used by schools, universities, and museums around the world for digitally researching, preserving, and exhibiting priceless fossils and artifacts.
The Summer Science Exhibition is a free, six-day festival suitable for all ages. Book your tickets via Eventbrite now and discover the academic 3D scanning for yourself!
