This ultra-realistic digital twin displays an intricate assembly of piping, valves, and control devices of a pressure regulating station within a larger fluid control system. Captured with a tried-and-true combo of Artec Ray II and Artec Leo, all major components are fully revealed in the 3D model, down to the tiniest detail.
For a scene like this, the main challenge lies in its complexity: the intertwined parts, metal valve bodies, and the abundance of sophisticated smaller elements like fine edges or interlinking of the chain are all no mean feat to recreate in realistic 3D. Choosing the right scanner for the job is key, so we started with Artec Ray II, a long-range LiDAR that excels at rapidly digitizing massive objects and entire scenes. Scanning this large section of piping with Ray II took about 15 minutes from five scanning positions in the densest point capture mode.
For a detailed digitization of hard-to-reach areas, the wireless Artec Leo came to the rescue, with HD frame recording set to High and data capture taking another 8 minutes. Leo’s smart surface quality indicator right on its built-in display helped us ensure we didn’t miss a single spot.
With all the necessary scan data obtained, it was time for Artec Studio software to shine. The entire processing workflow took 35 minutes, starting from the reconstruction of HD frames in High mode, followed by separate and then combined data registration from both scanners, and concluded with Smart Fusion with settings of 1 mm for Leo data and 3 mm for Ray II data.
To appreciate all the elaborate details of this 3D replica, including a true-to-life representation of the two flanged valves, smaller-diameter tubing, pressure gauges, and chain mounts, zoom in and rotate the model. With such a level of detail, this digital twin can come in handy in a range of applications, from HVAC and plumbing to wide-scale engineering and manufacturing.
