Cam gear

A cam gear (also known as a camshaft gear) is a mechanical part used in internal combustion engines. This component is crucial for synchronizing the crankshaft and the camshaft. What you see here is a realistic digital twin of the part, created with Artec Point, a new metrology-grade laser scanner that delivers repeatedly accurate results.

Our scanning specialist needed 5 minutes for some quick preparation, applying some spray and putting three targets on each side of the gear. The actual scanning took another 5 minutes, with one scan taken in the vertical position to ensure proper alignment, followed by 10 minutes of processing in Artec Studio, including the use of the "Remove Base" option to automatically eliminate the platform the object was scanned on.

Made of cast iron, this part has a rough, slightly porous surface, creating an additional challenge for scanning. Artec Point was able to capture the surface in full, with no detail left unseen: as you give the model a spin, you can examine a substantial number of sharp teeth, evenly spaced around its circumference, as well as the stamped logos and serial number on the underside. All intricate areas of the gear were faithfully reconstructed in this crisp 3D model.
