Artec's US distributor 7 September 2009 Exact Metrology, Inc. (Cincinnati, OH) has added the Artec3D Scanner to its metrology product offerings. The hand-held Artec3D Scanners require no mounts or markers, and they are said to be suitable for a variety of applications including computer graphics and animation, medical imaging, archiving, and prototyping. Exact Metrology offers a range of complete Artec3D Scanner systems, including hardware, software, and training, starting at about $15,000.

Applications

Quality control

Manufacturing parts is inextricably linked with quality control and fault detection. An effective early fault screening procedure can significantly reduce the costs that may arise from warranty repairs. Traditional 2D quality control systems do not ensure diagnosis of all types of defects. In 3D video mode, Artec’s 3D scanners can quickly and accurately assess the surface shape of parts located on a conveyor belt. By using 3D scanning, a technician can monitor the precision of the whole surface as required.

Most commonly used models: Artec S, Artec MH, Artec M, Artec L

Reverse Engineering

Production processes often involve obtaining blueprints and CAD models based on a single part or fitting. On occasion, in moulding, for example, there may be a need for an associated part to be produced.

Artec 3D Scanner makes the process of Reverse Engineering significantly easier. First, the scanner generates a 3D model of the part, then, it uses specialized applications (such as Geomagic, Rapidform etc) to generate a CAD model based on an existing polygonal grid. Software that comes supplied with the scanner allows users to save 3D models in a number of widely used formats, which makes it considerably easier to transfer data between applications.

Most commonly used models: Artec S, Artec MH, Artec M, Artec L
